Mar 22, 1996 · Dubbed "Girl 6" by her employers, the actress is treated with respect by her boss (Jennifer Lewis) and is well-liked by her co-workers. However, she has a hard time emotionally distancing herself from her work, and she finds herself becoming infatuated with Bob (Peter Berg), one of her regular callers, going so far as to set up a meeting with him.
"Girl 6," written by Suzan-Lori Parks, strains harder to sound serious notes, as with a little girl whose fall down an elevator shaft is linked to Girl 6's psyche. The film isn't sure what to make of this, or of the romantic attentions of Girl 6's ex-husband (played charmingly by Isaiah Washington), or even of Girl 6's hopes for an acting career.

Girl 6 is not a laugh-out-loud comedy so much as it is a satire of the nature of the struggle of the typical New York City actress with big dreams. She can hardly get a job and eventually resorts to using her talents to the most basic and competently lucrative degree as a phone sex girl.
