On Thanksgiving Day, Laura's mother Lois and stepfather Vic visit and as the boys watch football on television, the women are getting dinner prepared. When Lois lights a cigarette, Laura asks for a drag. Lois then questions her about when she started smoking and says that she has one now and again to relax.
Delta Burke plays a compulsive gambler, and Gerald McRaney her husband, as in real life, in "Going for Broke." The film shows the step by step deterioration of a woman's life when she starts betting at the local casino. She borrows from the foundation for which she works, borrows from family, and eventually gambles the grocery money.
