Thelma's African Romance: Part 1 is the first part of the fifteenth episode of Season 4, and the seventy-sixth overall. It is one-half of an episode. Written by John Ashley Hamilton and Bob Peete, the episode, which was directed by Gerren Keith, originally aired on CBS-TV on January 19, 1977.
Thelma gets suspended after arranging a school boycott. She also becomes the object of desire for Ibe, an exchange student who proposes that they live together.
Thelma and her college friends are having a meeting to decide what to do about the school cafeteria, but things come to a head when the African exchange student, Ibe, starts making sexist remarks about "woman's work".
