Governor John Langdon House. Building his house at the end of the Revolution when New Hampshire’s economy was depressed, merchant John Langdon (1741–1819) used wealth gained through wartime privateering to employ some of Portsmouth’s best craftsmen, several of whom had recently served in the war.
John Langdon (June 26, 1741 – September 18, 1819) was an American politician and Founding Father from New Hampshire. He served as a delegate to the Constitutional Convention, signed the United States Constitution, and was one of the first two United States senators from New Hampshire.
Esteemed by George Washington as the finest home in Portsmouth, the John Langdon house is a classic example of Georgian architecture, with several tasteful additions over the centuries blending and enhancing its original design. As such it is a Georgian gem and well worth the visit.
