We don’t know why she did not want to go there in 1799, but she visited from May 14 to June 2. St. Nicolas’ Church, Great Bookham, externally still much as it was when Jane Austen visited there.

Beautiful unspoilt common land - great for dogs and bird watching. Very accessible from Little Bookham, Great Bookham, Fetcham, Cobham road and Downside - with car parks at each of these entrance points. The land is superbly maintained and managed by Ian Swinney the National Trust warden who lives on site.
