Visiting the waterfalls of the Missouri River will help you understand how Great Falls got its name and its nickname of the Electric City. Great Falls is home to five major waterfalls along the Missouri River that power five hydroelectric dams. They are Black Eagle, Rainbow, Colter, Crooked, and the similarly named Great Falls.
The first dam in the area was built at Black Eagle Falls. It is a scenic low waterfall that flows over large rocks in front of Black Eagle Dam. You can see the falls from the Black Eagle Memorial Island, which has scenic trails, picnic tables, and a public restroom.
