January 20, 1999. The historic Grosse Point Lightis located in Evanston, Illinois. Following several shipping disasters near Evanston, residents successfully lobbied the federal government for a lighthouse. Construction was completed in 1873.
The Grosse Point Lighthouse is located at the intersection of Central Street and Sheridan Road in Evanston, IL. Grosse Point Lighthouse is a wonderful scenic spot where you can relax, and enjoy the beach view (and the beach itself). The lighthouse is old and pretty :-)

Grosse Point’s light was discontinued in 1941, when lighted buoys were anchored seven miles offshore. The tower’s Fresnel lens was reactivated in February of 1946 and now serves as a private aid to navigation, showing a group of two flashes every fifteen seconds.

Grosse Point Lighthouse was built by the United States Government in 1873 as the lead navigational aid marking the approach to Chicago's harbor. Mariners had to be careful when following the shoreline into Chicago's harbor as there were shallow water areas (shoals) off Grosse Point responsible for sinking or stranding vessels.
