The landgrave laid siege to the castle in 1447, getting two cannons up that hill, but to no avail. His attempt to take the nearby Heldenburg failed as well. But the army pillaged and burned the villages around Grubenhagen castle. The summer palace in Rotenkirchen was rebuilt in 1520 as an agricultural property; the old castle fell into ruins.
