34 years later, the Guardians of the Galaxy are renowned as heroes after 2 months for defeating Ronan the Accuser. They accept a job from Ayesha, leader of the Sovereign, to defend valuable batteries from an Abilisk in exchange for Nebula, whom the Sovereign captured following the Battle of Xandar.
The Guardians leave with Nebula. After the Sovereign find that Rocket stole some batteries for himself, the Sovereign attacks the Guardians ship with a fleet of drones. The drones are destroyed by a mysterious figure, but the Guardians crash-land on a nearby planet named Berhert. The figure reveals himself as Quill's father, Ego (Kurt Russell).
