Elected to the House of Commons in 1886, he served as home secretary (1892–95). A leader of the Liberal Party, he became prime minister in 1908.
Herbert Henry (H.H.) Asquith was the last Prime Minister to lead a purely Liberal government. In peacetime, he led a reforming ministry, laying some of the foundations of the welfare state, and leading through the constitutional crisis of 1909-11.
