Before making a decision as to a permanent living situation, Harry, with Tonto in tow, decides to visit his bookstore owning divorcée daughter Shirley Mallard in Chicago, Illinois. But the planned New York City to Chicago flight changes out of circumstances to a road trip.
After staying briefly with his son Burt (Phil Bruns), Harry decides to travel across the country, accompanied by his cat, Tonto, to visit his other grown children.
