Both are dressed in black and framed by a black background, reciting Zhuyin Fuhao, a Chinese phonetic alphabet used today, Lee says, only in Taiwan and by the Chinese diaspora.
Helen Lee is a Chinese-born, British–French medical researcher who won the European Inventor Award 2016 in the Popular Prize category for inventing diagnostic kits for resource-poor regions of the globe. During a recent stay as resident artist at the MIT Glass Lab, Lee explored the use of letters of the alphabet embedded in glass cane as a design element for her blown glass globes.

Lee’s studio practice is informed by her trades as a glassblower and graphic designer, and a penchant for writing. She holds an MFA in Glass from RISD and a BSAD in Architecture from MIT.
