Henry Box Brown (born 1815, Louisa county, Virginia, U.S.—died June 15, 1897, Toronto, Ontario, Canada) American enslaved person who succeeded in escaping slavery by hiding in a packing crate that was shipped from the slave state of Virginia, where Brown had worked on a plantation and in a tobacco factory, to the free state of Pennsylvania.
