His mother was Elizabeth Tingle of Loxley, Bradfield. Wilde was christened at the Loxley Congregational Chapel in Loxley, Sheffield on 24 October 1872.

He was a 39-year-old Liverpool-born second mate who had served on other White Star Line ships and was a Lieutenant in the Royal Naval Reserve. He was a father of four children and a widower who had lost his wife and twin sons in infancy. He died in the sinking along with his wife and four children.

Henry Tingle Wilde was born on 21 September, 1872 and grew up in Walton, Liverpool. Aged 17 he began his apprenticeship with Messers. James Chambers & Co., Liverpool. Completing this in 1893 he stayed with the company and served as third mate on the Greystoke Castle and later as third mate on the Hornsby Castle.

Wilde, who was chief officer of the Titanic, commenced his sea career in the sailing ships of Messrs. James Chambers and Co., of Liverpool.
