Hoagland attends Indiana University and forms his own small jazz band, eventually named "Carmichael's Collegiates", which makes him a campus celebrity.
Hoagy would tag along. Like a sponge, he absorbed music from his mother, from the visiting circuses, and from the black families and churches in his neighborhood. Ragtime was in the air, and his mother mastered the Maple Leaf Rag and other popular tunes of the day. In 1916, his family moved to Indianapolis.
Hoagy Carmichael was one of the most inventive and adventurous of the great American songwriters. Much of his best work reflects his love of the jazz of the 1920s, most notably one of the greatest standards from the era, “Stardust”.
