Founded in 1842 as Valley Union Seminary in the historical settlement of Botetourt Springs, it is one of the oldest institutions of higher education for women in the United States . Hollins enrolls about 800 undergraduate and graduate students.

East Building (1858), the earliest surviving building on the quadrangle, is a brick dormitory with a massive three-story Doric veranda. Built as a chapel, Bradley Hall (1883) has narrow, round-arched windows below a steep hipped roof pierced by a large, centered pedimented dormer.
