Hollyhock House is a National Historic Landmark and a transitional structure for Wright, bridging his Prairie style and his textile block structures. Built in 1917 for oil heiress Aline Barnsdall, it was intended as a residence and a theater complex, but became a public park in 1927.
Hollyhock House was Frank Lloyd Wright’s first Los Angeles commission and an ode to California’s freedom and natural beauty. Built between 1919 and 1921 for Aline Barnsdall, the house introduced young architects Rudolph Schindler and Richard Neutra to Los Angeles.
