In the town of Ainsley, Ind., troubled schoolboy Shockey (Mickey Rooney) lives on the wrong side of the tracks with his father, Fred Carter (Edward Pawley), a war veteran who has recently started drinking. The arrival of kindly schoolteacher Mary Evans (Anne Nagel) helps lift Shockey and his father out of their hardscrabble existence.
