  2. Feb 19, 2022 · The Port Town of Horta. Faial’s capital, Horta, is a major seafaring centre and a regular meeting point for yachts and other vessels crossing the Atlantic, having played host to streams of caravels, clippers and catamarans over the centuries.

    • Marina da Horta. Yachts and smaller vessels sailing across the Atlantic have called at the harbour in Horta since the Azores were discovered. In 1986 this was modernised as a marina with 300 berths, all completely out of the wind.
    • Museu da Horta. In a former Jesuit college, this museum near the marina is a repository for Faial’s art heritage and old-time trades. You’ll get to grips with the ancestral knowhow that goes into the island’s pottery, wool and linen-making.
    • Peter Café Sport. One of those rituals you have to observe in Horta marina is to stop by this bar next to the water and order a gin and tonic. It is packed with yachtsmen making merry, and every available surface is festooned with yacht pennants and paraphernalia from around the world.
    • Horta Old Town. Thanks to its university Horta is one of the youngest towns in the Azores, which injects more life into its bars and restaurants at night.
    • The Seafront. Horta sits on a natural bay enclosed between the Monte da Guia and the Espalamaca promontory, thus creating a stretch of about 3 km of seafront that originally was a long stretch of black sand and rocks.
    • Horta Marina. The Horta Marina is a major stop for yachts and vessels sailing in the Atlantic. The Marina, located in the southeast on the island of Faial, very close to the centre of Horta, is the main marina in the Azores and also the fourth most visited in the world.
    • Peter Cafè Sport. “If you sail to Horta and don’t visit Peter’s, you’ve never been to Horta.” This is, especially among yachtsmen, a common phrase repeated over and over again and expresses a reality built around a bar opened as far back as 1918 (a hundred years ago!)
    • Porto Pim. Made famous (at least among Italians) by a book by Antonio Tabucchi – (The Woman of Porto Pim) , this small agglomerate of little houses lies on the southside of Horta harbour, partly clinging to the volcanic promontory of Monte Queimado, and partly across Porto Pim bay, which holds the only white sand beach of Faial, if not of all Azores Islands.
