Houlton is a town and county seat of Aroostook County, Maine, United States, on the Canada–United States border. As of the 2020 census , the town's population was 6,055. [2] It is perhaps best known for being at the northern terminus of Interstate 95 and as the birthplace of Samantha Smith , a goodwill ambassador as a child during the Cold War .

Houlton is the county seat for Aroostook County and is nicknamed the “Shiretown”. Houlton was settled in 1807 by Aaron Putnam and Joseph Houlton. At that time, it was still part of Massachusetts. Maine became it’s own state in 1820. The town of Houlton was incorporated in 1831.
