Houlton is the county seat for Aroostook County and is nicknamed the “Shiretown”. Houlton was settled in 1807 by Aaron Putnam and Joseph Houlton. At that time, it was still part of Massachusetts. Maine became it’s own state in 1820. The town of Houlton was incorporated in 1831.
Houlton, the Shiretown of Aroostook County, was once a boomtown. At the turn of the 20th century, Houlton was jumping with agriculture, forestry and railroads, bringing in cash and immigrants. Come for a visit and you can still recall those heady days.

Houlton, town, seat (1839) of Aroostook county, northeastern Maine, U.S. It lies along the Meduxnekeag River 120 miles (193 km) northeast of Bangor. Settled in 1805 and named for one of its founders, Joseph Houlton, it soon developed as a lumbering town and was incorporated in 1831.
