Mar 29, 2020 · The second episode of How I Met Your Mother was titled "Purple Giraffe" and focused on Ted trying to find a reason to spend more time with Robin after botching their romance. In the episode, Robin did a news report on a child who got stuck in a crane machine after trying to get a purple stuffed giraffe.
This is essentially what happened to the kid who got stuck in the crane game - he refused to continue "playing the game" to get what he wanted (a stuffed purple giraffe), and this backfires when he gets stuck. In other words, Robin is Ted's proverbial purple giraffe.
"Purple Giraffe" is the second episode in the first season of the television series How I Met Your Mother. It originally aired on September 26, 2005 on CBS. The episode was written by Carter Bays and Craig Thomas and it was directed by Pamela Fryman.
