Season 6 of How I Met Your Mother aired from September 20, 2010 to May 16, 2011 on CBS and contained 24 episodes from Big Days to Challenge Accepted.
Ted runs into Cindy at the bar with a girl. He wonders if the girl might be the roommate he was fascinated by but never saw. Cindy reveals she is actually gay and dating Ted helped her discover that. Cindy makes her move on the girl and Future Ted reveals the two women got married and adopted a child. A series of scenes taking place in the future reveal Ted to be the best man at a wedding, and that he will meet his future wife there. While packing up their mother's house, James and Barney find an unsent letter to Sam Gibbs, which leads to their discovery that Sam Gibbs, a pastor, is James' father. Loretta Stinson offers the identity of Barney's father on a sheet of paper, but Barney tears it up after realizing Loretta's efforts as a single mother. Robin struggles to move on from Don, leaving several threatening drunk voicemails for him. After several failed attempts at deleting his number, she finally does and eventually forgets the number all together, declaring she's finished with their relationship. Robin's new co-anchor, Becky, acts like a little girl and charms all the men around her, including Ted. Robin is confused as to why Becky would be appealing to anyone, and Ted remarks that Becky makes him feel needed. He upsets Robin when he says she never made him feel that way. Robin then asks Barney if he ever felt needed by her and he also says no, but explains that's what he loves about her. Ted rejects Goliath National Bank's second offer to work with them, but eventually accepts. The GNB Headquarters is to be built over an historic hotel, The Arcadian. Plans to destroy the building get the attention of social activist Zoey Pierson (Jennifer Morrison), who rallies for the preservation of New York's history. Ted is torn between understanding Zoey's point and wanting to achieve his dream of building a skyscraper. Ted is later shocked to find out Zoey is married to an extremely rich man who is friends with Barney and Marshall's boss. Zoey threatens to blackmail Ted if he reveals her wealthy status but both agree on a truce. Barney and Robin get into trouble at a museum for touching as many displays as they can. When reprimanded by a security guard, Barney asks him to check the archives for evidence he once destroyed a whale skeleton at the museum as a child. The archived incident reveals the man Barney had always thought was his uncle had signed a form listing him as Barney's father. Barney and Robin are stunned and he asks her not to tell the rest of the group. Future Ted reveals Marshall ends up leaving GNB in the near future.
Ted calls his old school friend Punchy, which causes Punchy to impulsively show up in New York. He reveals he's engaged and asks Ted to be his best man. Seemingly, this is the wedding shown at the beginning of season six, where Ted must give his speech. Robin is initially skeptical that Ted knows how to be a good best man but Ted impresses her. She says if she ever gets married, she wants Ted to be her best man, too. The gang are forced to have Thanksgiving at Zoey's house and it is revealed she has a troubled relationship with her stepdaughter, and is spending Thanksgiving alone. Ted begins to realize he has feelings for Zoey. Meanwhile, Robin gets a new job at World Wide News, reunited with her former annoying co-host, Sandy Rivers.
Marshall and Lily struggle to conceive and Barney accidentally reveals that his doppelganger has not actually been found yet. Lily is scared that the false promise is bad luck. Marshall and Lily are stunned when the fertility doctor they visit is actually Barney's doppelganger. Marshall must provide a sample for further testing but his parents plan a surprise visit. Marshall eventually reveals to them that he is scared he can't give them a grandchild but they tell him not to worry. Marshall and Lily both find nothing is wrong fertility wise and Marshall initially starts to celebrate at the bar. He meets Lily outside who tearfully informs him that his father has died of a heart attack. The gang tries to support Marshall, but he is upset that his dad's final words to him were not meaningful. Eventually, he discovers a voicemail where his father tells him he loves him. The gang all call their parents to check in. Barney tells his mother he is ready to meet his real father.
Ted reveals he is in love with Zoey, but since Zoey is married, he cannot be friends with her. Zoey is also in love with Ted, and is getting a divorce. Since both don't know how the other person feels, Marshall tells each of them about their feelings, and Ted about Zoey's divorce, and they kiss.
Barney meets one of Robin's work friends, Nora (Nazanin Boniadi) and is instantly taken by her. He tries to deny his crush but cannot hide it. He is initially unsure he can commit to her and when they begin dating, Nora tells him she wants marriage and kids. Barney initially says he wants the same but later reveals he was lying. After Nora breaks up with him, he shows up at the cafe she's at with her parents. He watches her from the door and envisions apologising to her then meeting her parents. In reality, he turns and walks away. Barney is reunited with his dad, Jerome (John Lithgow). Barney is uncomfortable with Jerome's new suburban dad life, favoring the "old" Jerome who led a rock 'n' roll party lifestyle. Barney initially declares he will not to see his dad again but when Marshall notes that he is the one who will never see his dad again, Barney accepts an offer to have dinner with Jerome and his family. The dinner goes awry when Barney discovers Jerome's young son JJ is named after Jerome. Barney storms outside and tries to take JJ's basketball hoop down, asking Jerome why he couldn't have been a father to him. Jerome has no answers but vows to do anything to make up for leaving. Barney takes the hoop and gives it to Ted for his future family home.
Marshall becomes increasingly depressed working for GNB, and wants to return to his original dream of being an environmental lawyer. Lily supports him even though they are unsure how they will cope financially. Ted finds Zoey increasingly controlling and unsupportive of him. Marshall and Ted support the preservation of The Arcadian, which creates tension with Barney. During a hearing to decide the fate of the building, Ted testifies against Zoey's cause and they break up. The Arcadian is demolished and Ted's dream building begins construction.
•This is the first season to begin and end with scenes in what would later be known to be Barney and Robin's wedding weekend although only the groom's identity would be revealed at the end of the season.
