It’s nice to walk on the pier during Covid because it is less crowded. It is a short pier and at the end, there is a Ruby’s Diner. There are a lot of fishermen on the pier catching mackerel. There are also a lot of wooden benches along the pier to sit and take the view. The view of the beach from pier is really nice. The pier has restrooms.
The View. Standing on the pier, you get a terrific view of Balboa Beach with its soft, yellow sand lined with bright-colored beach umbrellas. While the beach is open year-round, it tends to be chilly. The best time to take a nice swim is between June and August when the weather is balmy and the water is warm.
Not to jinx it, but parking for Balboa Pier is so much better than the parking at the Newport Pier. However, it can still get very crowded. Parking is free after 6pm in off-peak, otherwise it is a small fee to park.
