May 3, 2024 · I have a permit for a Mt Whitney ascent on 5/8 and will be in Lone Pine for 3 days. Can anyone please recommend any mountain hikes / climbs in the area with a similar difficulty level? Something in the mountains and with nice views. I will have crampons, an axe, spikes, etc. Thank you!!

May 4, 2024 · Step 1: Developing a Baseline. If you are a beginner hiking starting from scratch, it would be foolish to assume you could walk up tomorrow and go from zero to hiking 10 miles. Before you get into the nitty gritty of a targeted hiking training plan for your long distance hike, you NEED to have a solid foundation.
Day 1- drive in the morning, start hiking around noon, hike 3-6 miles, camp. Day 2- wake up before dawn, summit, hike back to camp, sleep. Day 3- wake up early, hike back to car, drive home in the early afternoon. That’s a realistic itinerary for the vast majority of average fitness people.
