The year 2000 saw the premiere of Nyman's opera Facing Goya. Featuring a libretto by Victoria Hardie, it was an expansion of their 1987 one-act opera Vital Statistics. He then composed a pair of operas with playwright Michael Hastings: 2003's Man and Boy: Dada and 2005's Love Counts.

Between 1968 and 1978 he worked as a music critic and in 1977 he founded the Campiello Band, later renamed the Michael Nyman Band. Many of his filmscores were composed for the films of Peter Greenaway. He has also written several operas, ballet music and a large number of chamber and concert pieces.

Michael Laurence Edward Nyman, CBE (born 23 March 1944, Stratford, London) is an English composer of minimalist music, pianist, librettist and musicologist, perhaps best known for the many movie scores he wrote during his lengthy collaboration with the filmmaker Peter Greenaway, and his multi-platinum soundtrack album to Jane Campion's The Piano.
