The peony garden at the Nichols Arboretum has never been routinely – if ever – fertilized since at least the 1930s – nearly a century ago! Because of the viral and genetic research being done in the Peony Garden, we do not use any kind of chemicals that could impact the results of the study- including fertilizers and pesticides.
May 23, 2018 · The plants are arranged in 27 beds, with each full bed containing dozens of peonies. The garden holds nearly 800 peonies when filled to capacity and more than 10,000 blooms during peak blossom time. Although a few peonies have no fragrance, the vast majority have a range of scents from delicate to bold.
Go around the plant again and now dig under the plant: have your spade at about a 45 angle. Gently begin to lift the plant out of the soil. If the peony is still stuck in the ground, go back and dig even further under the plant with spade angled in.
