The United Nations has grown far beyond the institutions directly provided for in the UN Charter. This chapter and those immediately following review a number of global issues and risks that have emerged largely since 1945 and the responses through the UN family of specialized agencies, programs and convention secretariats.
Article 48 (2) says that "such decisions shall be carried out by the Members of the United Nations directly and through their action in the appropriate international agencies of which they are members."
