Hoyt Sherman Place, built in 1877, stood empty after his death until 1907 when members of The Des Moines Women's Club began using it as their clubhouse. The Women's Club added a gallery to display their art collection and thus Hoyt Sherman Place became the first public art museum in the City of Des Moines.

Concerts at Hoyt Sherman are a real treat. It is not very large and so most seats seem intimate. I love the front, center and side seats of the main floor for a small concert and the front of the balcony "box" seats for a larger or louder concert. It's a lovely, graceful venue.

Situated on a hill Hoyt Sherman Place looks over downtown Des Moines from the NW side of downtown. I have only seen a couple shows here but both were amazing experiences. I saw Neko Case from the front row, and Lindsey Buckingham of Fleetwood Mac from about half way up the ramp.
