The Courtenay family said in a statement: “Hugh Rupert Courtenay, Earl of Devon, died peacefully on 18 August. “Adored husband of Diana and father of Rebecca, Nell, Camilla and Charles, and beloved 'Grumpy' to eleven grandchildren.
Sir Hugh Courtenay (1326–1349), KG, eldest son and heir of the 2nd/10th Earl, was one of the founding members of the Order of the Garter, but both he and his only son, Sir Hugh Courtenay (died 1374), predeceased the 2nd/10th Earl.
