Humphrey of Lancaster, Duke of Gloucester (3 October 1390 – 23 February 1447) was an English prince, soldier, and literary patron. He was (as he styled himself) "son, brother and uncle of kings", being the fourth and youngest son of Henry IV of England , the brother of Henry V , and the uncle of Henry VI .

Created duke of Gloucester in 1414, Humphrey played a prominent role, both in France and at home, during his brother's reign. He became protector of England following Henry's death in 1422, surrendering the office in 1429 when Henry VI was crowned, but continued as president of the minority council until 1437.

Having held few positions or military commands in his early life the Duke of Gloucester rose to hold positions as Protector of England, was appointed (though never took up) to the Lieutenancy of France and was heir to the English throne.

Sep 1, 2021 · HUMPHREY, Duke of Gloucester, called the Good Duke Humphrey (1391–1447), youngest son of Henry, earl of Derby, afterwards Henry IV, by his first wife, Mary Bohun (d. 1394), was born in 1391, probably in January or February, during his father’s absence in Prussia. He remained in England with his brothers during his father’s exile.

He was knighted at his father's coronation on the 11th of October 1 399, and created duke of Gloucester by Henry V. at Leicester on the 16th of May 1414. He served in the war next year, and was wounded at Agincourt, where he owed his life. to his brother's valour.
