Ian McDiarmid (/ m ə k ˈ d ɜːr m ɪ d /; born 11 August 1944) is a Scottish actor and director of stage and screen. Making his stage debut in Hamlet in 1972, McDiarmid joined the Royal Shakespeare Company in 1974, and has since starred in a number of Shakespeare's plays.
Ian McDiarmid is a Scottish actor and theatre director who has appeared in many films and TV shows, most notably as Emperor Palpatine in the Star Wars saga. He was born in 1944, studied psychology, and won awards for his work at the Almeida Theatre in London.
