These words, recorded in the Gesta Innocentii III Papae, are perhaps the most famous of Ingeborg of Denmark, queen of France (1174–1237). They were exclaimed in a moment of anguish at the ecclesiastical council of Compiègne on 5 November 1193, when her marriage to Philip II Augustus, king of France (1165–1223), was deemed illegitimate.

Ingeborg of Denmark ( Danish: Ingeborg Valdemarsdatter) (4 January 1347 – 16 June 1370) [citation needed] was the eldest daughter of Valdemar IV of Denmark and his wife Helvig of Schleswig. By marriage she was Duchess of Mecklenburg, although she died before her husband succeeded her father-in-law.
