Advance review (though some spoilers do follow):

Adapted by The X-Files' Glen Morgan from Michael Marshall Smith’s novel, BBC America's The Intruders premiere episode, premiering Saturday night, is a slow burn of a supernatural mystery. It's rich with questions and light on answers. As such, viewers wary of being led on a merry chase with little reward may be put off by the purposefully methodical pace.

The series follows former LAPD officer Jack Whelan (John Simm) whose wife, Amy (Mira Sorvino), vanishes after demonstrating some out-of-character and frankly, just plain odd, behavior. In the midst of his search, Jack's his high school friend, Gary Fischer (Tory Kittles) suddenly arrives seeking his help to solve a double homicide. These seemingly unconnected events are entwined in one of the world's oldest and most closely guarded secrets - immortality. Meanwhile, Richard Shepherd (James Frain), a ruthless assassin charged with guarding what appears to be an ancient cult, slaughters anyone who treads close to the truth as he hunts an innocent nine-year-old girl, Madison (Millie Brown) who's lost herself, as her body is taken over by the mind of a much older, and very dangerous man.

It's easy enough to follow along with Intruders' basic conceit: There are a group of people who've somehow managed to find the key to everlasting life, which involves the snatching of others' bodies. However, the particulars of the intersecting stories feels almost self-consciously steeped in shadowy intrigue. The bulk of the pilot unfolds like a long drawn out question, which in some ways is fine. However, the sense of import given to the underlying questions essentially sets the series up to be ultimately judged by the strength of its payoff. Ideally, there will be as much focus on character development as there is on creating and maintaining an enigmatic framework in the episodes to come.

Intruders has the potential to develop into an interesting series, but initially feels a bit overly weighty and purposefully slow. A layered thriller is a wonderful thing, but creating an air of mystery at every given moment - seemingly for it's own sake - may begin to wear a bit thin sans any sort of payoff. For now, I'll remain open to this unfol...
