Irene Cara was born on March 18, 1959, in The Bronx, New York. She began singing and dancing at an early age, and by the time she was a teenager, she was performing in Broadway musicals. In 1978, she made her film debut in the musical drama The Wiz, and in 1980, she starred in the film adaptation of the musical Fame.
