Ishpeming, city, Marquette county, northwestern Upper Peninsula of Michigan, U.S. It is located in the Marquette Iron Range, about 12 miles (20 km) west-southwest of Marquette. Founded in the 1850s as a centre for iron-mining activities, its name is Ojibwa (Chippewa) for “high grounds.” Since the 1880s Ishpeming has been a popular ski resort.
