It was a rare moment of protest in the Hague's "Great Hall of Justice" courtroom where Israel is facing a request by South Africa to halt its operations in Rafah and withdraw from the Palestinian territory. South Africa's case accuses Israel of violating the Genocide Convention. Israeli Justice Ministry official Gilad Noam said that argument was "completely divorced from facts and circumstances." "Israel is engaged in a difficult and tragic armed conflict. South Africa ignores this factual context, which is essential in order to comprehend the situation, and also ignores the applicable legal framework of international humanitarian law. It makes a mockery of the heinous charge of genocide." Noam said that Israel's military operations were not aimed at civilians, but at Hamas terrorists using Rafah as a stronghold. The latest hearings at the ICJ have been brought by South Africa to request emergency action in response to Israel's military assault on Rafah. That's as a part of South Africa's wider genocide case against Israel. In past rulings, the court has rejected Israel's demands to dismiss the case and ordered Israel to prevent acts of genocide against the Palestinians, while stopping short of ordering it to halt the assault. Outside the court, Palestinian official Ammar Hijazi said it was Israel's side that was presenting a "parallel reality." "...that is contrary to everything that the international community, the relevant institutions, the numbers of humanitarian workers who were killed, the number of journalists, the live stream of this genocide, which you have all seen." A decision on the request for emergency measures is expected next week. More than 35,300 Palestinians have been killed in Israel's seven-month-old assault on the Gaza Strip, health officials in the enclave said on Thursday (May 16). Nearly half the territory's 2.3 million people have taken refuge in Rafah. The war began when Hamas militants attacked Israel on October 7, killing 1,200 people according to Israeli figures and abducting 253 others. Ahead of Israel's presentation, several dozen pro-Israeli protesters gathered outside the court. They displayed photographs of hostages taken by Hamas fighters and demanded their release.

     STORY: The Kuwaiti Speciality Hospital is one of the last few places in Rafah that can care for the wounded or dying. But already overwhelmed doctors warn an Israeli invasion further into the southern Gaza city could send an influx of new patients lthrough their doors and push them beyond their limits. Already, medicine and proper equipment are short. Jamal al-Hams is a doctor. "We have been here from the start of the war until now, and I do hope they will not target us, they will not threaten us, I do hope the whole medical team will be able to continue to serve the injured people, the critically ill patients, the people who have chronic diseases - and they are complicated because of the shortage of the drugs they are using." The International Red Cross has set up a field hospital to try to meet what it described as "overwhelming" demand for health services since Israel's military operation on Rafah began last week. Gaza's medical system has virtually collapsed under Israeli bombardment. And mass casualties are feared if there's a full Israeli assault in its drive to eradicate Hamas. Doctors in Gaza already say they perform surgery, including amputations, with no anaesthetics or pain killers. Issa Daher manages the field hospital. “With the current situation of the Gaza strip, we believe that this field hospital will contribute to the general healthcare delivery services in the Gaza strip now that the majority of the health facilities are not functioning. The majority have ceased to operate and we are forming part of the field hospitals that are operational at the moment ready to receive injured patients." The closure of the Rafah crossing between southern Gaza and Egypt has stranded patients seeking treatment abroad. It has also made delivering aid, including medical supplies, even harder. World Health Organization spokesperson Tarik Jasarevic said on Friday (May 17) they hadn't got any into Gaza since before May 6. "We don't have medical supplies, we don't have fuel, we have hospitals that are under evacuation order, we have a situation where we cannot move physically." Witnesses and medical professionals said Israeli troops have attacked hospitals, blockaded them and killed doctors and other civilians there, which Israel denies. Israel says hospitals in Gaza are used by Hamas as bases, which the militant group and doctors deny.

     STORY: French police shot dead an armed man who set fire to a synagogue in the northwestern city of Rouen early on Friday (May 17). Officers opened fire when the assailant threw an iron bar at them and threatened them with a knife as he left the building. The synagogue had smoke billowing from it, a Rouen city official said. The fire has since been brought under control. The synagogue's Rabbi Chmouel Lubecki said he was left in "great shock" after the attempted arson attack, adding that his wife was present at the time. "She heard gunshots and screams. She thought it was the street that was lively, and then she saw smoke coming from the synagogue, so she immediately went down, she helped the firefighters get in the synagogue and that was it. We had a great fright. / Tonight is Shabbat. It is important to light the Shabbat candles to show that we are not afraid and that we continue to practice our Judaism despite the circumstances." The synagogue suffered extensive damage, including to its furniture, but no one was harmed, said the city's mayor. The attacker's identity and motive were unclear. Aurore Berge is the Minister for Gender Equality and Anti-discrimination. "The people who commit these crimes are condemned, and that is extremely important for the people who could be victims, who could be affected, to tell themselves that the state, the government is systematically and permanently by their side in this fight." France, like many countries across Europe, has seen a huge spike in antisemitic acts since Hamas' October 7 attack on Israel and Israel's invasion of Gaza in response. France hosts the Summer Olympic Games in just over two months. It recently raised its alert status to the highest level against a complex geopolitical backdrop in the Middle East and Europe's eastern flank.

Last week, South Africa asked for extra measures to protect Rafah, where more than a million Palestinians have been sheltering. It also wants the court to order Israel to allow U.N. officials, humanitarian aid groups, journalists and investigators unimpeded access to the enclave. Israel is set to respond in court on Friday. It has described South Africa's claims as baseless and on social media Israel's Foreign Ministry said its military abides by international law. More than 35,000 Palestinians have been killed in Israel's assault on Gaza, according to health officials there. The war began when Hamas militants attacked Israel on Oct. 7, killing 1,200 people and abducting more than 250 others, according to Israeli tallies. Israel says it needs to eliminate Hamas for its own protection. In January, the court ordered Israel to ensure its troops commit no genocidal acts against Palestinians in Gaza, allow in more humanitarian aid and preserve any evidence of violations. In filings, Israel has stressed that it's stepped up efforts to get aid into Gaza. This week's hearings will only look at emergency measures. It will likely be years before the court can rule on the charge of genocide. The court's rulings and orders are binding and cannot be appealed. While the court has no way to enforce them, an order against a country could hurt its international reputation and set legal precedent.

     STORY: Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was publicly challenged on Wednesday (May 15) by his own defense chief about his post-war plans for Gaza – or the lack thereof. In a televised statement, Defense Minister Yoav Gallant stressed the need to lay the groundwork for alternative Palestinian rule at the same time as defeating Hamas. He said he had been pushing the issue since the conflict broke out in October following Hamas' shock attack – but has received no response from the Israeli cabinet. "Unfortunately, this issue was not raised for debate and worse, an alternative was not raised in its replacement. Indecision is in essence a decision. This leads to a dangerous course, which promotes the idea of Israeli military and civilian governance in Gaza. This is a negative and dangerous option for the State of Israel strategically, militarily, and from a security standpoint." His comments mark the most vocal dissent from within Israel's top echelon against Netanyahu in the Gaza war. In a riposte that did not explicitly name Gallant, Netanyahu hinted that the retired admiral was making "excuses" for not yet having destroyed Hamas in a conflict now in its eighth month. But the conservative prime minister soon appeared to be outflanked within his own war cabinet. Centrist ex-general Benny Gantz, the only voting member of the cabinet other than Netanyahu and Gallant, said the defense minister had spoken "the truth". Gallant's criticism over Gaza echoes that of Israel's strongest ally, the United States. Washington has tried to give a role to the internationally-backed Palestinian Authority, which wields limited governance in the occupied West Bank. But Netanyahu has refused this, describing the Palestinian Authority as a hostile entity. On Wednesday, he repeated this position in a video statement within an hour of Gallant's remarks. Saying Hamas must first be eliminated before any move to create an alternative Gaza government, and demanding the goal to be pursued "without excuses". Netanyahu has said Israel would retain overall security control over Gaza after the war for the foreseeable future. Though he has stopped short of describing this as an occupation – a status Washington does not want to see emerge.

     STORY: These trucks were carrying humanitarian supplies bound for Gaza, now strewn across the road in the occupied West Bank as the enclave faces a severe hunger crisis. Palestinian hauliers said on Tuesday (May 14) they feared for the security of aid convoys to Gaza, a day after Israeli protesters wrecked the trucks. Videos circulated on social media on Monday showed protesters throwing supplies from the trucks at the Tarqumiya checkpoint. The Head of the Hebron Food Trade Association said Israeli soldiers stood by as the attack took place. Adel Amer is from the West Bank-Based hauliers union. "We went to the checkpoint, and after the checks we were surprised to see settlers on the roundabout of the checkpoint. They damaged the cars, they tore the tires off the trucks, they threw the contents of the truck on the ground, we gathered some of the products, and sent some of those products on to a bulldozer and sent them to sheep farms. Around 15 trucks were damaged, their haul was damaged, windows of trucks were broken, some drivers were beaten, some of the products were thrown away, and the whole loss for Hebron is around $2 million." Amer said some drivers are now refusing to take good to Gaza because they are afraid. A group calling itself Order 9 has claimed Monday's attack and says it acted to stop supplies reaching Hamas, accusing the Israeli government of giving "gifts" to the Islamist group. Palestinians and human rights groups have accused the Israeli military and police of deliberately failing to intervene when settlers attack Palestinians in the West Bank. The violent protest drew condemnation from the U.S., which has urged Israel to step up deliveries of aid into Gaza. Britain's foreign minister also condemned the (quote) "appalling" incident, saying Israel must call the attackers to account. No comment was available from the Israeli military. The Israeli police said a number of people were arrested and the incident was being investigated.

     STORY: Civilian casualties continue to tick up as Israel stepped up its assault in the northern and southern parts of Gaza on Monday. Rescue crews brought in badly-wounded civilians, some of them children, to a hospital in northern Beit Lahiya. Some of the most intense fighting for weeks is raging in both the north and south. Israeli forces had gone back into Jabalia, where they’ve said they have dismantled Hamas months ago, to prevent militants regrouping there. A medical worker, Fares Afana, says they’ve tried to reach the Jabalia camp. Bodies were recovered there after overnight strikes. But he claims Israeli forces had been targeting ambulance crews, blocking them from saving wounded and trapped civilians. In southern Gaza’s Rafah, streets were near empty as Palestinians fled the fighting. Israel on Monday cut across a main highway into Rafah, closing a main crossing point for aid. The U.N. says a foreign security staff member was killed on Monday when a U.N.-marked vehicle travelling to a hospital in Rafah was struck. This marks the first international U.N. fatality in the Gaza war. Hamas' armed wing says due to Israeli bombardments it lost contact with militants guarding four Israeli hostages, including U.S.-Israeli citizen Hersh Goldberg-Polin, who appeared in a Hamas video in April. Supplies are also wearing thin for many displaced Palestinians, who’ve fled the north and south to Deir al-Balah, in the center of the Gaza strip. “There is not enough water for all displaced people, there is not enough food, not enough markets for everyone." "This water tank that you see, this was barely enough for those who were already here, it was already not enough but we were living with it, so what about those who joined us? There are people from two camps, in addition to our camp.” The U.N. says around 360,000 people have fled Rafah since Israel’s evacuation order a week ago. Many uprooted families are moving to empty tracts of land along the coast, but the U.N. warns of poor sanitary conditions there. Starving Palestinians on one side of the border – and on the other… Israeli protesters blocking aid trucks to Gaza on Monday. Some Israelis were seen spilling contents of the trucks onto a road at a West Bank checkpoint – the second such incident in less than a week. This comes even as Israel has pledged to allow uninterrupted humanitarian supplies into the besieged enclave. Washington, which has paused some deliveries of weapons to Israel, as it disagrees with an assault on Rafah, has denounced "looting" these convoys. Gaza health officials say the Palestinian death toll in the war has now surpassed 35,000. The conflict began after militant group Hamas burst into Israel on October 7, killing 1,200 and taking more than 250 hostages.
