Rákosi's father, József Rosenfeld, was called "Kossuth's Jew" by the villagers, because he had been a member and avid supporter of the oppositionist Party of Independence and '48. He changed his surname Rosenfeld to Rákosi in 1903.

Rózsay József (1848-ig Rosenfeld) ( Lakompak, 1815 – Balatonfüred, 1885. május 19.) zsidó származású magyar orvos, gerontológus, a Magyar Tudományos Akadémia levelező tagja (1864). Élete. Lakompakon (ma: Ausztria, Burgenland tartomány) született, de szüleivel nemsokára Csáktornyára költözött, ahol apja gróf Festetich László uradalmi orvosa lett.

Az akkor Magyarországhoz, ma Szerbiához tartozó bácskai Ada községben született a szegény, nem túl vallásos zsidó terménykereskedő Rosenfeld József és Léderer Cecília hatodik gyermekeként. Édesapja három, édesanyja hat elemit végzett. Tizenkét testvére született.
