Sep 11, 2021 · J R Jayewardene was the first executive President of Sri Lanka. He began his political career as the finance minister of Ceylon in 1946. He was a pioneer who brought about an economic upsurge decade following independence. Sri Lankan economy continued to grow owing to measures he took, even amidst a civil war.
J. R. Jayewardene initially entered the Colombo University College to read English, Latin, Logic and Economics. However he soon switched to Law College, passing out as an advocate in March 1932. Donning the family mantle, he started a law practice. On the 28th February 1935, he married the charming heiress Miss Elina Bandara Rupasinghe.

The Jayewardene cabinet was the central government of Sri Lanka led by Prime Minister (later President) J. R. Jayewardene between 1977 and 1989. It was formed in July 1977 after the parliamentary election and it ended in January 1989 when Jayewardene's second limited term ended.
