Dec 4, 2021 · In 1983, Murray proposed a new model for self-organisation in biological pattern formation. The prevailing model at the time was the coupled system of reaction–diffusion equations proposed by Turing who hypothesized that spatial pattern arose due to cells responding to chemical pre-patterns, set up by the phenomenon of diffusion-driven instability (Turing 1952).

Professor Murray was awarded his baccalaureate degree in mathematics and doctorate in applied mathematics at the University of St. Andrews (Scotland) in 1953 and 1956 respectively. He also has a master of arts degree, 1961, and a doctor of science degree, 1968, from the University of Oxford (England).
J.D. Murray was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA. He was an actor and writer, known for Tropic Thunder (2008), Hidalgo (2004) and The Batman (2004). He died on 27 December 2020 in Stevenson Ranch, California, USA.
