1898 to 1939. James Lansdowne Norton was born in Birmingham in 1869, the son of a cabinet maker. As a boy he showed an early aptitude for mechanical devices and upon finishing his education was apprenticed to a toolmaker in the jewellery trade. In 1898 he started the Norton Manufacturing Co. to make chains and other items for bicycles.
