Cosmopolitan and well-travelled, he was a key figure in the development of the traditional Flemish landscape, refining an approach originally conceived by Joachim Patinir and later shaped by the work of Gillis van Coninxloo III.
A flower painter and landscape artist, Jan Brueghel the Elder worked from nature. Bringing home the flora he depicted in his tightly composed still lifes, he often went great distances to find rare examples.
