The Jan Matejko Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków ( Polish: Akademia Sztuk Pięknych im. Jana Matejki w Krakowie, usually abbreviated to ASP ), [1] is a public institution of higher education located in the centre of Kraków, Poland. It is the oldest Polish fine art academy, established in 1818 and granted full autonomy in 1873.
Jan Matejko was a Polish painter known for his historical and military paintings of Polish events. He was the director of the Jan Matejko Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków, where he taught many prominent painters. He painted portraits, murals and oil on canvas paintings of historical scenes, such as Battle of Grunwald, Union of Lublin and Rejtan.

Later, he became director of the art academy in Kraków, which was eventually renamed the Jan Matejko Academy of Fine Arts. A number of his students became prominent artists in their own right, including Maurycy Gottlieb , Jacek Malczewski , Józef Mehoffer and Stanisław Wyspiański .
