     You appear to be quoting the Wikipedia Java history page. On that page it says:

     ...and "end of public updates" for Java 8 is scheduled for January 2019 for commercial use, and not earlier than December 2020 for non-commercial use.[3]

     ...which seems fairly clear in terms of the "(Commercial)" vs. "(Non-commercial)" part of that chart. It links to the Oracle Java SE Support Roadmap, which has these definitions:

     Commercial Users. Commercial Users are entities other than Oracle Customers that use Java SE for business, commercial or production purposes as part of a Java application delivered by a third party or developed internally.

     Personal Users. Personal Users are individuals who use Java SE on personal desktops or laptops. Personal users include individuals using Oracle Java SE to develop applications for hobby or educational purposes, play games or run consumer productivity applications.

     ...and further down it says that "Commercial User End of Public Updates" is January 2019 and "Personal User End of Public Updates" is December 2020.

     "Vendor specific" means exactly that: Different vendors (Oracle, OpenJDK) will have their own policy for when extended support of Java SE 11 ends.

     When you type in command prompt java it searches the PATH env variable and the first result it hits - returns. Since you pointed the PATH to JDK 1.7_51 - that's what you're getting.

     JAVA_HOME environment variable is defined as an agreed protocol for applications that uses Java. It does not apply when you type in command prompt java -version (or java + any other switch).

     You may use update-java-alternative command to check and update the java versions installed on your system To list all the installed versions :

     update-java-alternatives --list-

     To use other version as the default java version:

     sudo update-java-alternatives --set /path/to/new-java-version-

     The /path/to/new-java-version you can get from the fist command

     If the command update-java-alternatives(the preferred way for debian based systems) is not available then use sudo update-alternatives --config java

     Also to change the JAVA_HOME you have to run : source /etc/environment after editing the /etc/environment file by appending/editing following variable

     JAVA_HOME="/path/to/new-java-version"-

     Also make sure that if you have setup these values in .bashrc or .profile of any user, replace them with same values

     JAVA_HOME="/path/to/new-java-version"-

     and then run source .bashrc or source .profile

     This just happened to me yesterday. Followed instructions to the letter, and still resulted in a different Java version (1.8.0) instead of the expected (11.0.5) for my downloaded version of JDK11. Funny enough, CMD prompt returned the correct Java version (11.0.5) for the 'javac -version' command, but not for the regular 'java -version' command. I was even told to try uninstalling the existing Java load by my IT expert, as he couldn't think of anything else to try... (I did not end up removing Java)

     Turns out he did help me though, perhaps accidentally, but only realized this in hindsight. He told me to try moving the path variable

     %JAVA_HOME%\bin

     up to the very top of the displayed list of path variables found within the [Edit environment variable] window, for the PATH System Variable option. This did not work immediately, so we figured it had no effect. But I believe this failed because it turns out I had made an oversight when typing the variable in the first place. I had written the word "home" using small caps, instead of large caps. Once I realized my mistake and fixed it to show "HOME" in large caps, my CMD prompt returned the correct java -version of (11.0.5), which matched the javac -version command result.

     Please note: I then tried moving the %JAVA_HOME%\bin variable back to the bottom of the list, where it was originally created, and the java -version command no longer displayed v.11.0.5, but returned the original answer of v.1.8.0. So, I played around a bit and found that this variable needs to be ABOVE the following variable within the existing PATH window:

     C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Oracle\Java\javapath

     Hope this helps others as it helped me!

     In the Environment Variables move the JAVA_HOME above like the picture under:

     And for Java 8 you can create JAVA8_HOME as in the picture

     I solved this by updating the path in user variables instead of updating in system variables.

     Currently I have:

     JAVA_HOME = C:\Program Files\Java\jdk-11.0.6

     and

     path containing %JAVA_HOME%\bin

     (in User variable)
