Mar 27, 2024 · Jelly Roll Morton was an American jazz composer and pianist who pioneered the use of prearranged, semiorchestrated effects in jazz-band performances. Morton learned the piano as a child and from 1902 was a professional pianist in the bordellos of the Storyville district of New Orleans.

Ferdinand "Jelly Roll" Morton (October 20, 1890 – July 10, 1941) was an American virtuoso jazz pianist, bandleader, and songwriter whom many consider the first true composer of jazz music. A light-skinned Creole, Morton grew up in a respectable family where he was exposed to opera and a rudimentary musical education.
Oct 28, 2022 · Sadly, KPCC reports, Morton never got the chance for a comeback. Shortly after booking a venue to perform in Los Angeles, he was hospitalized. "Jelly Roll" Morton died 11 days after he was admitted on July 10, 1941. He was only 50 years old.
