John Ball Zoological Gardens, often called John Ball Zoo, is located in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Established in 1891, it is one of the oldest zoos in the United States and spans around 140 acres. The zoo is home to more than 2,200 animals from over 230 species, with exhibits featuring animals from around the world.
The Zoo’s Master Plan was updated and approved by Kent County Commissioners in 2015. In January 2024, the Kent County Board of Commissioners approved an amendment to the 2015 Master Plan regarding parking, which reflects various feedback from our community and the desire to create safer and more efficient parking at John Ball Zoo.
