He was succeeded by his son John Richard Lowndes French, the second Earl, who was a Captain in the Royal Field Artillery, as well as a talented artist. On his death, the titles passed to his son John Richard Charles Lambart French, the third Earl. He fought in the Second World War as a Captain in the King's Royal Rifle Corps.

Born in 1921, French was the son of John French, 2nd Earl of Ypres and his wife Olivia Mary John. He was educated at Winchester College and fought in the Second World War between 1939 and 1945, rising to the rank of Captain in the King's Royal Rifle Corps. After the war, he continued his education at Trinity College, Dublin. [1]
