John Matshikiza was born in Sophiatown, Johannesburg in 1954. Sophiatown was soon after demolished to make way for the White suburb of Triomf (Triumph). Matshikiza's father, Todd, was a renowned jazz pianist, composer and journalist who shot to fame in 1958 with his musical King Kong, which had an all-black cast.
