Mar 18, 2024 · John Paul Jones, American naval hero in the American Revolution, renowned for his victory over British ships off the east coast of England on September 23, 1779. He was given a Congressional Gold Medal in 1787, and his grave in Annapolis, Maryland, was made a national shrine.
Oct 28, 2020 · Updated on October 28, 2020. Scottish by birth, Commodore John Paul Jones became the new United States' first naval hero during the American Revolution (1775-1783). Beginning his career as a merchant sailor and, later, captain, he was forced to flee to the North American colonies after killing a member of his crew in self defense.
John was born as “John Paul” but will add Jones later in his life. He was born the fourth child of seven and one of only five of such made it to adulthood. John Paul Jones will be remembered in history as a naval hero to some and a pirate to others.

JOHN PAUL JONES, 1747-1792; U.S. NAVY, 1775-1783. HE GAVE OUR NAVY ITS EARLIEST TRADITIONS OF HEROISM AND VICTORY. ERECTED BY THE CONGRESS, A.D. 1912. The assembled Congress sitting in New York, 16 October 1787, voted unanimously to award John Paul Jones a gold medal. He was the only naval officer of our Continental Navy to be so honored.

May 18, 2018 · JONES, JOHN PAUL. (1747–1792). American naval hero. Scotland. Born in Kirkcudbrightshire, on the Solway Firth, John Paul was the son of the gardener at Arbigland, which was the estate of William Craik (father of Dr. James Craik).
