Apr 22, 2013 · José María Arguedas (b. 1911–d. 1969) is by far the most important intellectual when it concerns notions of race and mestizaje in the Andes. He was born in Andayhuaylas, Peru, and was left at the care of his stepmother from an early age after his mother’s death during childbirth.
José María Arguedas was born in Andahuaylas, in the South of Peru in 1911. His mother died when he was two years old. His father was a lawyer but often absent. He did not get on with his stepmother or stepbrother so got to know the Indian servants and, as a result, their culture and language.
José María Arguedas was a Peruvian novelist, poet, ethnographer, folklorist, and anthropologist. Renowned for his dedication to indigenous narrative literature and commitment to the survival of indigenous cultures, Arguedas drew on his personal experiences in Quechua communities to portray indigenous culture.
